The Mayors Gate was conceived to pay tribute to Charleston's only two Irish mayors, the Honorable John P. Grace and the Honorable Joseph P. Riley, Jr, the current and longest sitting Mayor in the City's history. This gate marks the the beginning of the city's renowned River Walk which girds the pennisula and ends at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Stadium on the Banks of the Cooper River.
